I should really be typing up my fushigi yugi fan fiction since I only have one chapter and an epilogue to do before it will officially be finished, but some how it seems that my muse is absent right now, so I will continue finishing this.

I guess I better talk about the rest of the important characters. In regard to fushigi yugi the characters can be neatly divided up to two categories, whether they are related to Suzaku or to Seiryuu. So first, the ones related to Suzaku as they are the more important characters in the story. With the exception of Miaka and Yui, everyone else is celestial warriors of either Suzaku or Seiryuu.

Yuki Miaka (夕城美朱)- voiced by Araki Kae
The main protagonist of the story. She enters the universe of the four gods and becomes the priestess of Suzaku. When I first read the manga I actually quite like Miaka, but after re-reading it I actually realize that I actually really dislike her. The reasons of why I dislike her are that I feel she never realize the seriousness of the whole situation, as she constantly seem to regard eating as so much more important. And secondly- she is absolutely useless, and that combined with her inability of grasping the situation caused so many people to suffer.

Tamahome -voiced by Midorikawa Hikaru
Tamahome is the first celestial warrior met by Miaka when she arrive the world. (Hotohori being the second). Tamahome is basically the male lead of the story, and it is probably because I don’t like Miaka, which led me to not liking him. I think one reason is because he and Miaka are always so hesitant about their emotions even though it is so obvious that they both love each other. I think it is just I feel really indignified on behalf of Hotohori, he is really putting up barriers that are none existent when he doesn’t know how lucky he is.

He is very obsessed with money until he began to fall in love with Miaka (although to do him justice, the reason he is obsessed with money is due to having to support his family. At his family I always thought it is really ironic, he and Hotohori have about the same amount of siblings, but unlike Tamahome, Hotohori’s family is not even a family at all.)
Tamahome get to be reborn into Miaka’s world in order to be with her, the second OVA centres on him as it deals with the rest celestial warriors finding what contains his memories. In the second story arch there is the side theme of how the past and present are not separate due to Tamahome being ashamed that he lacked the power which he had in Konan, as a celestial warrior of Suzaku- instead of just being a normal man.

Nuriko – voiced by Sakamoto Chika
Nuriko is the third celestial warrior that Miaka find, and initially appears as one of Hotohori’s concubines (who are all ignored due to the fact that Hotohori has been in love with Miaka ever since he heard of the story.) Nuriko seems a relatively normal woman apart from being a celestial warrior of Suzaku, as well as being gifted with abnormal strength. Initially, Nuriko and Miaka have a rather antagonising relationship as it is revealed that Nuriko is in love with Hotohori, and therefore she is jealous of Miaka.

However, it is then revealed that Nuriko is actually a man, and the reason of him pretending to be a woman is due to the death of his younger sister, whom he loves very much. He dress and act as a woman as a way of preserving her memory, to make it appear as if she is still alive. Later on in the story, he realized that he has live in the past for too long, and begins to wear man’s clothing and even cut his hair as a symbol of letting it all go. He even gives up his love for Hotohori and seems to end up being in love with Miaka instead.

Initially, Nuriko seems a rather childish character, due to his infatuation with Hotohori as well as his seemingly very sincere believe of being a woman. It is rather funny, as he got really jealous when they come across a group of bandit, and not only does the bandits mistaken both he and Hotohori to be women, there is one specific bandit who regards Hotohori as being more ‘beautiful’ then Nuriko, at this Nuriko ends up really angry.

For me, Nuriko become a much more likable character in the end- especially when he give up his love for Hotohori, as he becomes rather protective of Miaka as well as trying to help Miaka and Tamahome’s relationship, which continues even onto the later story arch. In fact, he actually dies for the sake of protecting Miaka, and his last thoughts are actually to Miaka. In the second story arch, we also see the relationship between Nuriko and his elder brother.

Chichiri – voiced by Seki Tomokazu
The forth celestial warrior that Miaka finds, although in this case she didn’t really find him, as he actually found her first and begins to protect her. Chichiri is the oldest out of all the celestial warrior, and he is usually the one that thinks of what they should do. Chichiri is also very considerate, he actually uses his magic he let Hotohori travel with Miaka for sometime (in Konan, but not when they leave Konan), seeing how upset Hotohori is at having to remain behind due to his duties.

Chichiri is one out of the two celestial warriors who survives, (I did say that my character summaries usually included spoilers). In the second story arch we learn about his past, which explain how he obtained the scar on his face (which cause him to wear a mask for most of the time). When he was younger, his fiancée cancelled their engagement and he believed that it was because she fell in love with his best friend. This caused him to accidentally kill his best friend, as well as not saving his fiancée when he had a chance to. It turned out that what really happened was that his best friend was in love with his fiancée, and therefore kissed her, and by being a very traditional woman she believed herself to be unworthy due to that one kiss. I don’t really like his story because it is just so frustrating! I guess it’s also because it seems so anti-feminist, although that is not the author’s fault at all.

Tasuki –voiced by Hayashi Nobutoshi (who is now known as Kanna Nobutoshi)
The fifth celestial warrior that Miaka finds. Tasuki is a mountain bandit and is meant to be the new leader, initially he faces the problem of being usurped when he was away. Miaka and the rest helps him to get his position back, and he then decides to help Miaka and the rest, (his best friend will temporarily be the leader during his absence). Initially, at least for me, Tasuki seems a rather serious character, but this is quickly proven to be otherwise. He is usually one of the main causes of comical relief as he often jokes around and acts rather unserious for most parts.

As mentioned before, there are only two celestial warriors of Suzaku who survives, Chichiri is one, while Tasuki is the other. Initially he seems to treat Miaka as a little sister, although he keeps on saying that he hate girls (this is probably due to the fact that he is the only and youngest boy in his family of nine (ie. He has six elder sisters). Personally I think he is so fond of Miaka because of her being so useless, in the second story arch we get to meet one of his sisters (and she seems rather scary…kind of opposite to Miaka.) I think he is the type of guy who wants to play the role of an elder brother since he doesn’t get much chance to do so I his family.

However, the second story arch also explores his character a bit deeper in regard to his relationship with Miaka. It seems that he actually love Miaka romantically, as he get possessed and under the possession, he was meant to have acted out what he really wanted- which almost involve rape. On my part I don’t think Tasuki is romantically in love with Miaka, I think it’s the kind of sibling love that becomes too possessive. Loving them so much as a sibling that you feel you have a right of interfering in their life, and doing all sort of things that would hurt them as you believe that you are doing it for their own good. I know that some people don’t like what he does in the second story arch but I think it is within character- he really cares for Miaka and I think like many elder siblings, deep down inside their heart, they do not wish to share their little siblings out of the fear of the other hurting them.

Tasuki carries an iron fan around him as it is his weapon, it can emit flame.

Mitsukake –voiced by Ishii Kōji
The second to last celestial warrior. He is gifted with the ability of healing, and he ends up becoming a doctor. But he gives up his healing anyone when he failed to save Shoka, the woman that he love (she was suddenly sick and had he been beside her then he could have saved her, but as he was healing someone in another village, he failed to reach her before she died). It turned out that Shoka, unable to rest, is haunting the world, after Miaka and the rest managed to help him putting Shoka to rest, he joins them.

Mitsukake is a very serious and silent character but there are times when he jokes with the rest of the Suzaku warriors. He died when Kutou officially declared war on Konan, as he uses up all his energy in order to use his power of healing people. Even though Chichiri, (who is beside him) tells him to rest, he insists on saving an infant, as he believes her to be Shoka’s reincarnation.

Chiriko –voiced by Kawakami Tomoko
The last of the celestial warrior to be found. Chiriko is also the youngest of all the celestial warriors of Suzaku. Even though he is very young, he is actually a genius, he studies very hard and was going to take the exams government officials must take to proof themselves, although this turns out to be only partly true. Like all the other celestial warriors, he has a word on his body that proves to anyone that he is a celestial warrior of Suzaku. However, unlike the others, he is also affected by the word. When the word is there, he is a very intelligent boy, but when it is gone, he lacks the high amount of intelligence that he have, and even become less brave (there is a scene where he is explaining something to Taisuki rather calmly even as they are chased by monsters, but when the word disappears, he begin to cry). Later, it is revealed that he actually didn’t go to find Miaka straight away even though he knows that she is the priestess, as the word suddenly disappeared, and he felt very afraid.

Chiriko dies due to having his body being possessed by Miboshi (a celestial warrior of Seiryuu). Seeing that his friends are unwilling to hurt him and therefore let Miboshi continue hurting everyone else through his body, he decides to stop Miboshi by the only possible way: he kills himself when he manages to gain control of his own body, as well as also killing Miboshi.

In the second story arch, Chiriko reveals that his motive for studying so hard is because he felt that is the only thing he was good at. He also reveals that there were time when he felt very inferior to everyone else, as he was not that useful, but after what had happened, he realize that he is not useless, and is more proud of who he is for the simple reason that he is fighting alongside everyone.

Ok…that is half done. But I thought I’ll just give the basic data of the celestial warriors of Suzaku before I move onto the warriors of Seiryuu. Basically all of the celestial warriors (regardless of the god that they serve) would have a word on them that serves as a proof of them being the celestial warrior of the deity. The words of the celestial warrior of Suzaku are red, while the celestial warriors of Seiryuu have blue words.

Age of everyone at the very start of the story (includes Miaka)= Hotohori (18); Miaka (15); Tamahome (17); Nuriko (18); Chichiri (24); Tasuki (17); Mitsukake (22); Chiriko (13).

The meanings of the celestial warrior’s character= Hotohori (星=star); Tamahome (鬼=ghost); Nuriko (柳=willow); Chichiri (井=well); Tasuki (翼=wings); Mitsukake (軫=chariot); Chiriko(張=Extended Net).

Location of character= Hotohori (left side of his neck); Tamahome (forehead); Nuriko (left chest); Chichiri (right knee); Tasuki (right forearm); Mitsukake (left palm); Chiriko (right feet).

Now…onto the characters related to Seiryuu…

Now, the celestial warriors Seiryuu. As I am a very biased person, I am going to start talking about my favourite character on the side of Seiryuu first, which is Soi, a celestial warrior of Seiryuu. She is actually my second favourite character and it is her that kept me watching the second half of the anime when Hotohori virtually disappears. I guess she is my favourite female character in the story. With the exception of Yui, every character mentioned below is a celestial warrior of Seiryuu.

Soi –voiced by Tanaka Atsuko
Soi is the only female celestial warrior of Suzaku and she was created with the intention of serving as a contrast against Nuriko. The result is that she dresses herself in masculine clothing- armours, and according to those who understand Japanese, the way she speak is very masculine as well. The reason that Soi does this is because she want to be of use to Nakago (see below), who she is in love with. She is a very skilled fighter, and she can manipulate lightening as well. But despite the fact that she presents herself as a very masculine woman who suppresses the usual limited boundaries and capability of most women in her time, she is actually a rather feminine person. (personally, I think Soi is one of the most beautiful female ever drawn by Watase Yuu, this could be due to the fact that by being a shojo manga artists, the artist would usually be drawing girls, so Soi is one the few women drawn by Watase Yuu. The other exception being Ceres from Ayashi no Ceres-aka Ceres, celestial legend, and it is just such a pity as Watase Yuu’s drawings are so beautiful! Her girls are often pretty, but they can never be as beautiful as her women.) According to Watase Yuu, Soi’s nature is very kind and gentle, and she has a desire of being seen as a woman (shown by how she would wear lipstick, despite being dressed in armours).

Like most celestial warrior of Seiryuu, Soi’s past is very bitter. Due to poverty, she was sold to a brothel when she was only twelve, and at her refusal of being obedient, the brothel owner had been hitting her. This led her to meet Nakago, as he beats up her brothel owner, although he then left her. But since that day, Soi has been in love with Nakago. However, it seems that Soi remained in the brothel, and probably ended up as a prostitute. It is unknown as to how she escaped and met Nakago, but once she found him, she ends up being willing to do anything for him.

Soi is deeply in love with Nakago, but the tragic thing is that he does not seem to love her back (Personally I think he is in love with Soi, although he doesn’t realize that until she dies). But upon discovering that Soi has the ability of healing or wounding someone by making love to them, Nakago would sleep with her. Even though she knows that she is only being used, Soi still willingly sleeps with him whenever he wishes to. (There is a scene when Nakago had held Soi in what seem a rather gentle fashion after they made love, and say that he will sent another out to do a task as Soi is still recovering. For me that serves as a sign of him actually loving her.) Due to Nakago’s attention to Yui (see below), she seems to loath Yui, although she still protect her (I think this is only due to Nakago’s orders)

Shortly before she dies, Soi bitterly states to Nakago that it seems she can never get him to truly be with her, and much to her sadness, he agree that it is impossible. I truly think that bit is one of the saddest bit in the whole story. She ends up dying for Nakago, and I think she is happy at how she dies because she actually saves Nakago with her death. In the very same battle which causes Hotohori his life, Taisuki throws a sword at Nakago, and out of instinct, Soi runs to Nakago, causing the sword to be stab into her instead. As she dies, she declares out her love for Nakago once more, as well as reminding him of their first meeting.

When Nakago dies, he sees Soi with his mother, and Soi is stretching her hand out to him. I think that is a sign of how the two of them finally managed to achieve happiness after they die.

Yui Hongo (本鄉唯) –voiced by Touma Yumi
The priestess of Seiryuu, as well as Miaka’s best friend. Now…I dislike Miaka, but I think I dislike Yui so much more. Because not only I think is she selfish, she is also hypocritical. I think I dislike her due to the fact that she doesn’t seem to feel guilty for what she did, even though she expresse some guilt. But her guilt only seem to limit to the celestial warrior Seiryuu, she doesn’t seem to take into account of what she did to the whole kingdom of Konan (I am biased I know, but we later discovers that Konan is having a very hard time recovering as their emperor is dead, and their future emperor is only born months after Hotohori’s deaths.)

Yui and Miaka initially enter the universe of the four gods together, and the two of them managed to leave. Miaka then entere the book herself, and then Yui somehow entere the book too. Unlike Miaka, she end up in Kutou, and instead of meeting her celestial warriors immediately, she met a bunch of thugs and she believe that she was raped. This cause her to be very bitter to Miaka, and she believe that Miaka purposely ignored her, as Miaka did not come to help her at all. Nakago saves her and she arrives in Kutou, and becomes the priestess of Seiryuu.

Miaka actually went to Kutou to find Yui, which made Yui very happy, and she was going to go with Miaka. But she then hears Miaka saying to Tamahome that he is the real reason that causes her to return. Once she hears it, she changes her mind and is dominated with the thought of gaining her revenge by Miaka. In fact, this becomes her main goal throughout the rest of the story. I think the ironic bit is that she gains her goal by betraying Miaka herself, through numerous deceptions. I guess she hold the believe of stopping as low as someone if they stooped that low in the first place. I am not saying this is wrong, but I think Yui is wrong because she never admit this, she keep on pretending that she never betrays Miaka until the very end. Although I suppose to do her one credit: she is not wrong in saying that it is unfair that Miaka is the priestess of Suzaku, as Yui did get the worse deal. She is being manipulated by her celestial warrior, and for many of them they only protect her due to another (eg Soi due to Nakago). But on the other hand, I lose much sympathy for her when she acts as if she did all the hard work when she actually didn’t do anything at all.

At the very end, after she discovers that she wasn’t raped at all, she immediately feels guilty and helped Miaka. And of course all her celestial warrior with the exception of one died, thanks to her, but she gets to go back to her world and lives happily with a new boy friend. Forgive my tone but as mentioned before, I really don’t like either Yui or Miaka.

Nakago –voiced by Furusawa Tōru
The most important celestial warrior of Seiryuu, he is really their leader, and the antagonist of the whole story. He is the general of Kutou, and the one who finds Yui. He saves her from being raped, but does not tell her that she was not raped, as he want to make her hate Miaka, in order to make sure that Yui would be manipulated by him. I think Nakago has the attitude of the end will justify the means, which I seriously don’t like. He commits many acts that are morally wrong, as well as being rather heartless, and even though we discover that he has a very tragic past, I still think that he is wrong. He has a very heavy influence on the rest of the celestial warriors and he is the true mastermind of the story.

Nakago is from the Hin tribe- which is a country destroyed by Kutou. As a result, he and his people are forced to wander, and are often despised. At a very young age he and his mother were attacked, and as a result he first unleashed his powers of a celestial warrior of Seiryuu (he can control energy- making it attack others). Even though he killed their attackers, he also accidentally killed his mother. It seems that he soon ended up in Kutou, and from what the drawings show- he ended up as a sex toy for the emperor. As a result of all that happening to him, he ends up very bitter and cold, vowing to have revenge at the gods for making his life this miserable.

Nakago wants to be a god, to live forever and have unlimited powers. Thus, he sees Yui (the priestess of Seiryuu), as a way to let him achieve this. He made it seem that he help and stand beside Yui for everything, and even declare out his love for her in the end- in a way, his plan worked as Yui said that she would give him one of her wishes (after the priestess summoned their god, they have the power to make three wishes).

Nakago ends up being killed by Tamahome, and it is important to remember that in the manga (which is the author’s full creation), Nakago actually lets Tamahome kill him. As Tamahome struck him the first time, he actually begins to remember what had happened to him when he was little, what he forced himself to forget. As he dies he sees Soi stretching out her hand to him, with his mother- a sign of him finding peace.

I really think that he does love Soi, as I mentioned before, and he actually holds onto Soi’s corpse for a very long time. There are some people who thinks that Nakago love Yui but I don’t believe this, I think he is only using her. I think Nakago is definitely someone who needs a woman who is capable of knowing all that he did, and still accept him, which Yui didn’t and doesn’t. (kind of like Sesshomaru from Inuyasha, that is why I think he and Sango would make a good pair.) He also said that he have no interest in little girls at all when he addressed Miaka, so I think the same apply for Yui as well.

Amiboshi –voiced by Ueda Yuji
He is a celestial warrior Seiryuu but he actually made his first appearance pretending to be Chiriko, being a spy. Due to his presence Suzaku was unable to be summoned by the easy way (using the scroll of Suzaku, this needs to be burned but since all seven celestial warriors were not there, the scroll was basically wasted)

Even though he claims to despise the rest of the Suzaku warriors by saying that they are too noble and nice, he actually yearns to be a celestial warrior of Suzaku. Upon having his real identity discovered, he chooses to jump into a river. Luckily, he survives but ends with amnesia. He was adopted by a couple who had a son who would be his age had he not died. Later on, Miaka found him and he does not recognize her, until the very end- when he asks Miaka to stay with him, and ignore everything by offering a forgetfulness potion to her. (he pretended to have amnesia)

Amiboshi is actually a very peace loving person, and it seems that he only obey Nakago’s orders due to the fact that his brother is with Nakago, as well as hoping that by summoning Seiryuu- everything would be alright. He really wants Kutou to have peace as he could still recollect what he had suffered when he was very young due to war. I think he lost his parents due to war. Since then, he has to look after and protect his brother, Suboshi.

Later on, he attacks Tomo as the other is attacking Miaka. This then cause his twin brother to attack Tomo. Suboshi then makes him drink the forgetfulness potion, by saying that he is too gentle and peace loving to be involved in all these activities that involvs war, so it is best that he forgets. He had no memories of anything related to the celestial warrior of Seiryuu and seems to live with his adopted parents in great happiness, there is even this picture that shows him with a girl who is probably from the village.

He is almost always seen with a flute, this is not only due to the fact that he is able to play the flute, but because he can control people’s will by his flute, as well as using it to attack.

Suboshi –voiced by Ueda Yuji
The younger twin brother of Amiboshi. Even though the two twins are completely identical in appearance, they have very different personalities. He is more rash and more fierce. Due to having no other people other then his brother, he has a very strong love for his brother that is almost scary. He would literally do anything for his brother, including killing. When he thought that his brother was killed by the celestial warriors of Suzaku, he went to kill Tamahome’s family. But then he ends up falling in love with Yui, and his love for her is equally strong as the love he bears his brother, in fact, she is the first person he ever loves beside his brother.

Seeing his brother attacked by Tomo (Amiboshi attacks him first due to Miaka), he actually kills Tomo. Amiboshi then offers to give him the potion of forgetfulness, as he says that is the only way for them to be together again as they were. Much to my surprise, Suboshi actually refuses, as he realizes that he love Yui so much that he isn’t willing to forget her. Due to his love for Yui, he hates Miaka, and plans to rape her as he believes her to be responsible for Yui’s rape (which is what Yui told him), the ironic bit is that this takes place fight after he sees his beloved brother protecting Miaka. In the end he is killed by Tamahome. I suppose I do feel a bit sorry for him, as his love is completely unreturned, and I think he can do better.

Ashitare –voiced by Ryuzaburo Otomo
Initially he appears as a human-beast like creature. Apparently, Nakago had found him in a circus and took him away, therefore he becomes Nakago’s pet. Not much is known about him, and the author herself said that Ashitare is a relief to draw as he really has no character. But now I kind of think that it is a bit of a pity, as he could have had a very interesting story.

He fights with Nuriko twice and ends up killing Nuriko, although Nuriko seriously wound him as well. Nakago explains to Soi that due to the battle the human side in Ashitare got killed, and Ashitare then transforms to a wolf. He still carries out one of Nakago’s order, but as soon as that is done, Nakago kills him.

In regard to Ashitare there is an interesting scene. Nakago was whipping him and Soi actually suggests that he stops as she believes that he has punished Ashitare enough- I think that serves as a sign of Soi actually being a very nice person.

Tomo –voiced by Nobuo Tobita
The thing I remember most about Tomo is that he is another character who ends up being harmed due to the anime’s ‘make Tamahome and Miaka so much more important.’ As well as coming back alive in the first OVA series to be portrayed as an absolute bastard, then to get killed, but as mention before, I don’t like the first OVA, so I am going to ignore it. For me what happened in the manga is what happens in the story.

Like most of his following warriors of Seiryuu, he has a crappy childhood. He is abandoned by his parents when he was born, and taken in by a group of performers. Due to this, he wears what actors in the Chinese opera wear, including having his face painted. This is quite a pity because the real Tomo (without the make up) is actually quite a good looking man. In fact, when I first saw a picture of him without the mask-like make up, I was really shocked! Ok…truth be told, I only got shocked after I worked out who the heck he is.

Tomo seems to be homosexual, as he is clearly in love with Nakago. Like Soi, he does everything because of Nakago. He plans to rape Miaka as a priestess have to be virginal if she want to summon the deity. This is only done due to Nakago, as he says that he actually hates woman, including have sex with them. But the author suggests that if he meets the right woman, then he might be able to fall in love with a woman. It is not certain whether he loves Nakago in the anime, but this is very obvious in the manga. As a result, he and Soi are quite hostile towards each other, but unlike some others, the two can put aside their dislike and work together relatively well. He can create illusions so he made Tamahome think that Soi is Miaka, and Soi then almost managed to kill Tamahome due to the illusion by seducing him. Although he does insult Soi by suggesting that she is a whore (she probably was one, but apparently the word he uses suggest more of her being a loose woman, a slut, instead of just being a woman who provides sexual service for money)

As mentioned before, he is killed by Suboshi, and his dying thoughts are an apology to Nakago.

Miboshi –voiced by Nakazawa Midori
The last Celestial warrior of Seiryu to appear. Little is known about him other then the fact that he is well over two hundred years old, and possesses infants’ body in order to continue living. Other then that, he can also summon monsters. He ends up being killed by Chiriko when Chiriko suddenly manage to control his body after Miboshi possessed it. Basically Chiriko destroys his own body, and by doing so Miboshi has no other body, and so he gets killed.

I think it is very highly that Miboshi might have something to do with the story of the priestess of Genbu (the guardian of Hokkan, another kingdom in the universe of the four gods), as Genbu was summoned about two hundred years ago. This is my version of what I think his past is, which I used in my fan fiction: Buried Memories.

CONTAINS SPOILERS OF GENBU KAIDEN
As we all know, Hakei (the crown prince of Kutou) stated to Uruki that he would not accept the priestess of Seiryuu and her celestial warriors because that would indicate that the country is in danger. I think what happened is that as a twist of fate, he will end up having a son who is a celestial warrior of Seiryuu (ie. Miboshi). As a result, he will try to kill Miboshi, as a taunt towards fate. Due to this Miboshi will be burned with a desire to survive as proof that he can, and will do anything to survive. Which includes possessing others’ body.

Oh my gosh this is such a tiring review…but at least it is finished now. So I am almost finished with my fushigi yugi review, I have only one more thing to do, and that is to talk about the character songs. And of course, I got to correct my numerous grammatical and spelling error first before I get to post this up.

Oh and I almost forget, basic imformations of the celestial warriors of Seiryuu.
