I meant to do this for quite sometime, but somehow I kept on not managing. I think I was meant to have done this in April but somehow one thing after another. But I want to recommend a song that I really like. The song is a Spanish song ‘Hijo de la luna’ and it is originally sang by the Spanish band Mecano, the song is written by Jose Maria Cano, one of three in the band.

I really like the song because of the lyrics, which I will put up now.

Son of the moon
Foolish is he who doesn't understand.

A legend tells of a gipsy woman
Who pleaded with the moon until dawn.
Weeping she begged
At the break of dawn
To marry a gipsy man.

"You'll have your man, tawny skin,"
Said the full moon from the sky.
"But in return I want the first child
That you have with him.
Because she who sacrifices her child
So that she is not alone,
Isn't likely to love it very much."

Chorus:
Moon, you want to be mother,
But you cannot find a love
Who makes you a woman.
Tell me, silver moon,
What you intend to do
With a child of flesh.
Son of the moon.

From a cinnamon-skinned father
A son was born,
White as the back of an ermine,
With grey eyes instead of olive --
Moon's albino child.
"Damn his appearance!
This is not a gipsy man's son
And I will not put up with that."

Chorus

Believing to be dishonoured,
The gipsy went to his wife,
A knife in his hand.
"Whose son is this?
You've certainly fooled me!"
And he wounded her mortally.
Then he went to the woodlands
With the child in his arms
And left it behind there.

Chorus

And the nights the moon is full
It is because the child
Is in a good mood.
And if the child cries,
The moon wanes
To make it a cradle.
And if the child cries,
The moon wanes
To make it a cradle.

Note: the translation is not done by me, it is taken from someone’s web site but I can’t remember who, and I’m not even sure whether this is the translation given by the book. So if this is your translation, and you see this, please don’t be angry as to shut off your website because I really am not doing this on purpose. Tell me about it and I will immediately acknowledge you.

I really like this song because it tells what happened in a legend-like way. The child is obviously an albino, but due to people’s attitude and knowledge that time, it was seen in this light. As I listened to the song I can not help but to feel so indignant at the women who suffered accusations when it was not even their fault, I am sure that there have been cases when the birth of a child with blue eyes from parent with dark eyes, caused so much pain for the mother. It just isn’t fair…

The reason I suddenly decided to do this during April is because I suddenly discovered that there’s a French and Italian version as well, so I downloaded and it was really interesting, so I thought that I’ll share this song.

But I actually heard Sarah Brightman’s version first, before I listened to Mecano’s original version, and it took me a long time to decide which version I like the best. The dilemma is this, Sarah Brightman has a much nicer voice, but I feel that she did not really sing it with emotion. It was nice…too nice, just a nice song. The Mecano version, on the other hand, is different. Ana Toroja does not have a voice as nice as Sarah Brightman’s, but she sang the song with much more emotion. So in the end I realize I like Ana’s interpretation of the song better, because I felt touched as I listened to her sing. With Ana’s version you can pity the blameless child with her, because it sounded as if she is very moved by the child’s fate.

In conclusion, a very good song that is very worth listening. The original Spanish version is called “Hijo de la luna”, the French one is called “Dis-Moi Lune D’Argent (and I know enough French to translate it myself!!! Tell me moon of silver, so I guess it means Tell me, silver moon) While the Italian version is called: “Figlio Della Luna.”
